28 February 2026 fell on a Saturday, so SARB published no rate that day. The figures shown are the last trading day, Friday 27 February 2026.

The European Central Bank rates are converted through the euro and typically differ from SARB rates by around half a percent. Crypto is a daily snapshot taken 06:00 SAST, not a live feed — check live prices. Prices at 28 February 2025 are not available; the free price histories only reach back twelve months. Stablecoins are excluded — they track the dollar.

For a tax return, use the rate SARS specifies. SARS publishes its own average and spot exchange rate tables, and those take precedence. Crypto assets are assets, not currency — gains are taxable, as revenue or capital depending on the facts.

The simplified rate — when you can use it

There are two ways to be paid for business travel, and the simplified rate belongs to only one of them.

Deemed cost — the table above

For a fixed travel allowance (IRP5 code 3701), paid monthly whether you travel or not. You keep a logbook, look your vehicle's value up in the table, and claim the deemed cost against the allowance on assessment. The simplified rate does not apply here.

Simplified rate — 495c per km

For a reimbursive allowance (section 8(1)(b)(iii)), paid per business kilometre actually travelled. You may elect the prescribed rate instead of working out actual or deemed costs.

Travel between home and your normal place of work is private travel and cannot be claimed. A logbook recording date, kilometres, destination and reason is required for any claim.

Transfer duty

Payable on the date the property is acquired, not by tax year — so the ladder that applies depends on the transfer date.
